President of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Mahmud Karimov dies

ANAS vice-president Arif Hashimov told APA that Mahmud Karimov died at night. He said the academician had suffered from a disease. Hashimov said the details of Karimov's funeral would be determined within a day.

According to APA, Mahmud Karimov suddenly felt bad yesterday, he had sharp heart pains. Though the academician was immediately hospitalized, decision was passed to urgently take him to Turkey. He was seen off to Turkey by a special plane accompanied by doctors. Mahmud Karimov died on board the plane.

Mahmud Karimov's funeral will be reportedly held tomorrow.

Mahmud Karimov was born in Yerevan city of Armenia on October 18, 1948. He graduated from the faculty of physics of Azerbaijan State University.

He defended the doctoral dissertation on physics of semiconductors and dielectrics.

In 2001 he was elected a full member of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.
