Following an extradition request addressed by the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the competent authorities of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as negotiations held after the submission of documents required in accordance with international procedures, an agreement was reached on the extradition of Azerbaijani citizen Tahir Aydin Asgarov to the Republic of Azerbaijan, the press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office told APA.
Thus, according to materials collected in a criminal case under preliminary investigation by the Main Operational and Investigation Department of the State Customs Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan, reasonable suspicions were established that Tahir Aydin Asgarov, acting as part of a group of persons by prior conspiracy, smuggled a large quantity of narcotic drugs intended for sale across the customs border of the country without declaring them.
Based on the evidence collected, on February 25, 2026, a decision was made, in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan, to charge him under Articles 206.3.2, 234.4.1 and 234.4.3 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan (smuggling committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, illegal acquisition, storage and transportation of a large quantity of narcotic drugs for the purpose of sale). As he evaded the investigation, a preventive measure of arrest was imposed on him and he was placed on the international wanted list through Interpol’s National Central Bureau in Baku.
As a result of operational-search measures, the person was located and detained in the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Following the completion of the extradition procedures, the person was brought to the Republic of Azerbaijan by the Penitentiary Service of the Ministry of Justice and handed over to the investigative authority.
The Prosecutor General’s Office will continue its close cooperation with foreign partner institutions, including Interpol, in identifying internationally wanted persons and extraditing them to the Republic of Azerbaijan.
