The final trial of the criminal case of Ganimat Zahidov, who was accused of making open calls against the state, has been held, APA reports.
Today, the verdict was read in absentia at the trial held at the Baku Court on Grave Crimes, chaired by Judge Fakhri Mammadov.
According to the verdict, Ganimat Zahidov was sentenced to 7 years in prison.
Note that Ganimat Salim oglu Zahidov has been declared wanted, as he was involved as an accused person under Article 281.2 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan (public calls directed against the state, when committed repeatedly or by a group of persons) and allegedly hid from the investigation. By the decision of the Sabail District Court of Baku dated July 25, 2018, a pre-trial detention measure of four months was chosen against him.
On August 4, 2018, the competent authorities of the French Republic were approached in order to announce the charges to the accused person who was hiding from the investigation, but his detention and extradition were not possible.
On September 18, 2025, Ganimat Zahidov was summoned to the investigation for October 20, 2025, through Public Television and Radio, but he did not appear.
Based on Articles 467-13.6 and 467-13.7 of the Criminal Procedure Code, in absentia proceedings were initiated against the accused Ganimat Zahidov by a decision of the Binagadi District Court dated November 14, 2025, and he was provided with a defense lawyer.
Based on the body of evidence collected in the case, a decision was made on September 18, 2025, to bring a renewed charge against G. Zahidov under Article 281.2 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan. However, since he was hiding outside the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan, it was not possible to formally present the charge to him.
According to the indictment, on July 4 and July 15, 2018, Ganimat Zahidov posted public calls on the YouTube platform encouraging the use of force against the existing authorities of Azerbaijan, which were formed and operate on a legal basis.
The preliminary investigation in the criminal case was completed on November 17.
