“Regulating early marriage in Azerbaijan is one of the key priorities of state policy,” Aynur Osmanova, Head of the Legal Support and Human Rights Department of the Prosecutor General’s Office, said during a live broadcast on the Prosecutor General’s Office Instagram page, APA reports.
She stated that the provision allowing the marriage age to be lowered by one year has been abolished.
“Currently, the marriage age is 18 for both sexes. Conducting a religious marriage ceremony does not exempt individuals from liability. The Code of Administrative Offences also provides for fines for conducting religious marriage ceremonies involving minors. Conducting a religious marriage ceremony with minors also entails liability,” she said.
