The smuggling of a large quantity of narcotics into the country has been prevented, the Press Center of the State Border Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan told APA.
On February 20, within the service area of the “Goytapa” border detachment of the Border Troops of the State Border Service, an attempt by four unidentified individuals to violate the state border from the Islamic Republic of Iran toward the Republic of Azerbaijan was observed.
The border outpost was immediately alerted under the “To Arms” command, and necessary measures were taken to prevent the violation of the state border.
The border patrol ordered the violators to stop and pursued them, firing warning shots into the air. However, the border violators, who failed to comply with the order, put up armed resistance and opened fire with the intent to endanger the lives of the border guards. They abandoned the packages they were carrying and fled back, taking advantage of the darkness and the wooded terrain.
As a result of border search and operational measures carried out jointly with officers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, three packages belonging to the border violators were discovered in the area, containing a total of 33 kilograms and 900 grams of narcotic substances, as well as other material evidence, which were seized.
The opposing side was informed about the incident through the border representative line.
Operational-investigative and search measures regarding the fact are ongoing.
