17 foreign nationals detained for illegally crossing Azerbaijan’s border in May

Twenty people were detained by the State Border Service for violating the state border during May 2026, APA reports, citing the Press Center of the State Border Service.

Among them were 7 citizens of Iran, 3 of Azerbaijan, 2 of Morocco, 2 of Nigeria, 2 of Algeria, and 1 citizen each of Afghanistan, Türkiye, India, and Pakistan.

As a result of measures to combat illegal migration, 9 people who attempted to cross the state border using a forged date stamp and passport or documents belonging to another person were detained.

A total of 211 people were detained for violating border regime rules, and relevant measures were taken against them.

As a result of crime-fighting measures, 316 people wanted by law enforcement agencies were detained and handed over to the relevant authorities. The departure from the country of 831 people banned from leaving the country was prevented, while 8 people banned from entering the country were prevented from entering.

As a result of measures against the illegal trafficking of narcotic substances, 319 kilograms and 182 grams of narcotic substances and 7,338 tablets of various compositions were detected and removed from circulation.

A weapon was used against one border violator who failed to comply with the lawful demands of border guards, in accordance with the requirements of the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan "On the State Border." First aid was provided to the injured person and evacuation to a specialized medical institution was ensured, but despite the efforts of doctors, it was not possible to save his life.

In one case, an attempt to transport narcotics into the country's territory by means of an unmanned aerial vehicle was prevented.
