Trial on case of Elchin Babayev, member of the armed group leaded by the former Prime Minister Suret Huseynov in 1994-1995, started at the Grievous Crimes Court. The trial is presided over by Mammedbagir Zeynalov, APA reports.
Public prosecutor Ilgar Gurbanov announced the indictment at the beginning. According to the indictment, Elchin Babayev, Suret Huseynov and Keramet Kerimov formed an armed group under the name “Martyr Families Protection Committee in Uctepe residential area in Ganja. After their plan to come to the power failed, he escaped but soon was arrested by ganja police officers. After the indictment Elchin was allowed to make a speech, but he refused. The judge announced his evidence given to the investigation. Answering the questions of public prosecutor, Elchin stated that He hadn’t joined any group fighting against the state.
“I didn’t tell the investigation that I had been a member of Suret’s armed group. That’s why I could escape the arrest and left for Russia. Then I returned Azerbaijan. I was informed in 2000 that I am wanted. I was only in the front line after joining “Nijat Protection Committee and didn’t use force against anyone, Elchin Babayev said.
His driver Intigam Babayev said that he had been unaware of illegal activities of “Nijat Protection Committee and Elchin’s arm use. Then Elchin asked the court to make a decision to involve witnesses to the trial by force. The court granted the petition. The trial will be continued on February 1. /APA/
