Iranian lawmakers seek to impeach economy minister over financial fraud

Baku-APA. Iranian lawmaker Nader Qazipour said Monday that 25 lawmakers have signed a motion to impeach Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance Shamseddin Hosseini over the recent 2.6 billion U.S. dollars financial fraud case, the semi- official Mehr news agency reported, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The Iranian media recently reported that several Iranian banks were swindled out of nearly 2.6 billion U.S. dollars in more than two years by holding a company named Amir Mansour Aria. This scam is said to be one of the biggest frauds in the history of the Islamic Republic.

Qazipour told Mehr that the motion will be submitted to the Majlis (parliament) Presiding Board on Oct. 11.

So far, 25 lawmakers have signed the motion and some others will join the move, he was quoted a saying.

According to the report and on the basis of Iran’s Constitution, the minister should appear in the parliament to answer lawmakers questions within 10 days after the Presiding Board of Majlis announces the receipt of the motion.

The lawmakers who seek the removal of Hosseini have referred to his failure to take measures necessary to prevent the fraud case and his incompetence in the management of the country’s economic and banking affairs, said Qazipour.

Earlier this month, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei urged the judiciary to deal seriously with embezzlers.
