Spokesman for the Ministry Ehsan Zahidov told APA that authors made mistakes while preparing this report. “Report on 2100 homicides in Azerbaijan is incorrect, because 194 deliberate murders were recorded in Azerbaijan last year. 182 (about 95%) of them were cleared as a result of operational investigative measures conducted by the law-enforcement officers. 2100 homicide facts have not been recorded in Azerbaijan. So many homicides were not recorded even during 1988-1993, which are the gravest period of criminogenic situation in the republic. Unfortunately, using these false figures, some mass media “experts” try to damage Azerbaijan’s image for cheap sensation”.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime released the Global Study on Homicide. According to the document, 468 000 homicides were committed in the world last year, most of them in Central and South America and Africa. According to the report, 2100 homicides were committed in Azerbaijan last year, 20 percent of them were committed by firearms.

The report does not show sharp increase of crimes in Azerbaijan. 77.5 percent of the homicide victims were men (aged 30-44), 22.5 percent were women. According to the report, more homicides are committed in Baku. Last year 2800 homicides were committed in Armenia, which population is less than population of Azerbaijan.
