Court passes judgment on former Azerbaijani serviceman accused of spying for Russia

The court passed a judgment. Ruslan Adil Alikhanov was sentenced to 12 years in jail.

The prosecutor had demanded 13-year imprisonment for him.

According to the indictment, former serviceman of Azerbaijani Armed Forces, Ganja resident Ruslan Adil Alikhanov (born in Krasnodar, Russia in 1967), cooperated with the Counter-Intelligence Department of the State Security Committee under the nickname Kupets 1990. After the collapse of the USSR he was involved in the cooperation with Azerbaijani intelligence bodies. Later, Alikhanov cooperated with Russian Federal Security Service under the nickname Kupin. From 1994 till he was exposed, Alikhanov regularly transferred information to the Russian Federal Security Service about the military potential of Azerbaijani Armed Forces, dislocation of confidential communication units. When he worked in Ganja Airport he transferred information about the military supplies brought from foreign countries.

Alikhanov was arrested after the investigations carried out by the Azerbaijani law-enforcement bodies.

He faced charges under article 274 (high treason) of the Criminal Code.
