Baku. Anakhanum Idoyatova – APA. “In accordance with the rules, Azerbaijan chairs the Council of Europe and the PACE committee meetings are traditionally held in the chairing country”, said the President of Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe Anne Brasseur.
As a part of her visit, Anne Brasseur also met with imprisoned Ilgar Mammadov and Tofig Yagublu.
According to her, she held meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Speaker of Parliament Ogtay Asadov, Minister of Justice Fikrat Mamamdov, Prosecutor General Zakir Garalov, as well as representatives of civil society during the visit: “We mainly discussed the issues related to Nagorno Karabakh at the meetings in the parliament. Territorial integrity can not be a subject of discussion, this principle should be respected by all CE member-states. Minsk Group has been established for settlement of this conflict. Azerbaijan and Armenia are represented in the PACE too. PACE also can contribute to settlement of the conflict through discussions and dialogue”.
A. Brasseur noted that the other issue that she discussed at the meeting was related to meeting European standards, fulfillment of obligations before the Council of Europe: “The Council of Europe has three principles: democracy, rule of law and human rights. All 47 member-states have shortcomings regarding this issue. Azerbaijan also has several shortcomings. Therefore, if the CE criticizes, it is also a assistance for solution of the problems”.
