Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani have issued a press statement after the officials documents were signed between Azerbaijan and Iran, APA’s correspondent reports from Tehran. President Ilham Aliyev said Iran’s support to Azerbaijan is very important in the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The Head of State stated that this conflict should be resolved in accordance with the UN resolutions: “Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity should be maintained. Iran’s position on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is close to fair and we are grateful for this position. The internationally recognized territories of Azerbaijan are under occupation. As a result of this occupation more than one million Azerbaijanis became refugees and internally displaced persons. All our historical and religious monuments in the occupied territories were destroyed by Armenians.”
Ilham Aliyev expressed satisfaction with his visit to Iran: “I think this visit is an important step towards the development of relations between Azerbaijan and Iran. This is my third official visit to Iran. We want to further develop relations between the two countries and there are great opportunities to achieve it. Earlier this year, I met with Hassan Rouhani in Davos. Currently, we continue our political dialogue in Tehran. Today we have throughly and honestly discussed various aspects of our bilateral relations. We carry out successful activities within the framework of international organizations. Our activities within the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Economic Cooperation Organization and the Non-Aligned Movement have been very successful.”
President Ilham Aliyev invited Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani to visit Azerbaijan. Rouhani said he would visit Azerbaijan at the earliest opportunity.
