Baku. Mubariz Aslanov – APA. “We are concerned over the fate of the Azerbaijanis living in Russia due to the recent processes in this country,” Chief of socio-political department of the Presidential Administration Ali Hasanov told APA.

Hasanov noted that the Azerbaijani authorities, including our embassy in Russia have repeatedly announced their proposals and recommendations for the solution of the problem. The department chief stressed that the Russian government is currently dealing with this issue: “Some of these processes spontaneously emerge in Russia. The shades of certain nationalists and the third interested sides are seen behind the processes. Of course, Russia knows how these processes, especially various actions against non-Russians undermine and cast a negative shadow upon its international image. At the same time, it seems that the Russian authorities are trying to control the processes and taking measures in this regard. The effect of these measures is currently being observed. But it is impossible to stop, control and completely manage in the short run such inciting events formed by certain circles for years. In any case, we are concerned over what is happening in Russia and following the measures taken by the Russian government towards these processes. We think that these steps will produce results soon.”

The PA official also commented on the claims of some circles that Russia is using these events as a pressure on Baku for Azerbaijan’s accession to the Customs Union. Hasanov said that specialists, researches are trying to interpret these issues from their own point of views: “I don’t think that Russia has used so unpopular, dangerous and negative means of pressure and impact against Azerbaijan. That is not so. The Russian government has no ground to exert pressure on Azerbaijan. Unions, initiatives and integration processes ongoing within CIS are based on voluntariness. Every member state assesses positive and negative sides of joining it and passes relevant decision. The highest goal of every member state’s participation in this process consists of representing its national interests. Therefore, I think vigilant approach plays a very important role in these processes. Azerbaijan and Russia also have vigilant approach to this issue. The efforts of some researchers, some forces to characterize these events as means of pressure on Azerbaijan have some grounds. Some forces in Russia – not official circles – try to use these processes against Azerbaijan, mar the joint interests and friendship formed between Russia and Azerbaijan, the Russian people and Azerbaijani people years ago.”
