The Global Baku Forum being held this time carries special significance, former Vice President of the World Bank Dr. Ismail Serageldin said during a press conference dedicated to the 23rd Global Baku Forum, APA reports.
“Although we are gathering in Baku for the 30th time on the eve of Nowruz, this time the situation is very different. The world is facing wars and is going through not only a transitional period but also a breaking point. The rules-based multilateral international order has received a very serious, perhaps even fatal blow. At the very least, it is clear that we have entered a new era. In this era, it is not enough to simply miss the past and try to return to institutions built for the 20th century.
In fact, we must develop a new approach to multilateralism and reshape it in order to address the problems of the 21st century. These problems may relate to political, military, environmental, humanitarian, development and other areas,” he said.
According to Ismail Serageldin, all of this requires commitment to the highest values across many areas, from human rights, equality, eliminating poverty and hunger, protecting the environment, responsibility toward one another, human solidarity, preserving biodiversity, to water security and food security.
“At the same time, we must reorganize institutions to address current crises while also laying the foundations for future strategies.
That is why I believe this Global Baku Forum is taking place at a time when the experience and wisdom of our participants are needed more than ever,” he added.
