“In 1990, civilians were fired upon in Baku, but the will of the people was not shaken," said Lithuania’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Kestutis Vaškelevičius, in his speech at the memorial event titled “Memory Lives Because It Testifies,” dedicated to the anniversaries of January 20 in Azerbaijan and January 13 in Lithuania, APA reports.

“We have never forgotten what happened in Baku. Azerbaijan has never forgotten the events in Lithuania. Lithuania is grateful for Azerbaijan’s support during the Vilnius events in 1991. Two Lithuanians of Azerbaijani origin were awarded medals for being injured in those events. Two different cities, two different dates, but one truth. Both the Baku and Vilnius events showed that freedom comes at a price,” the ambassador noted.

The Lithuanian ambassador noted that holding the memorial event at Mstislav Rostropovich’s house-museum was no coincidence, as he supported Lithuania during the Vilnius events, openly condemned Soviet aggression, and was engaged in charitable activities in Lithuania.

Vaškelevičius emphasized the importance of supporting neighbors even today, highlighting the significance of standing with Ukraine against aggression.

At the end of his speech, the ambassador expressed his gratitude to the people of Azerbaijan for not forgetting the Vilnius tragedy.

“We bow our heads before the cherished memories of the victims of both January 20 and the Vilnius events,” the ambassador concluded.
