The Front International de Decolonization (FID) has expressed its official position on the Bougival Accord signed in July 2025, APA reports.

On July 25 of this year, the FID expressed its deep concerns about the full and effective implementation of the right of the Kanak people to self-determination, as well as the full validity of the imperative principles of international law.

What is the Bougival Accord

It should be noted that the Bougival Accord is an agreement signed on July 12, 2025, in Bougival, near Paris, between the political forces of France and Kanaki (New Caledonia). This document defines a new political framework regarding the status of New Caledonia and envisages the recognition of the territory as an autonomous entity with a special status as the "State of New Caledonia", provided that it remains part of France.

According to the agreement, the Kanak people will have both French and newly created "Caledonian citizenship". In addition, the document includes issues such as the gradual expansion of the state's sovereignty, in particular, the full transfer of state powers in the areas of defense, security and other areas. In addition, a positive result of the referendum planned to be held in New Caledonia in 2026 is a prerequisite for the agreement to enter into force.

The right of the Kanak people to self-determination must be guaranteed

The Front International de Decolonization draws attention to the Nouméa Accord signed in 1988, which preceded the Bougival Accord, and notes that this agreement created the initial legal basis for self-government and political participation for the indigenous Kanak people, paving the way for the formation of opportunities for independence in the future. However, in May 2024, as a result of violent acts carried out by French law enforcement agencies, the Kanak people, who were demanding their right to freedom, were subjected to serious pressure, and 14 civilians lost their lives. These tragic events and subsequent political processes show that the current situation has not led to the establishment of lasting peace or the full recognition of the Kanak people's sovereignty. Thus, the decolonization process has not yet been completed and has not been fully realized.
