On June 17, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeyhun Bayramov received Abraham Hamadeh, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, who is on a visit to the country, the MFA told APA.
The meeting included an exchange of views on the current state and prospects of Azerbaijan-U.S. bilateral relations, regional and international security issues, energy security, transport and communication links, as well as the current situation in the post-conflict period in the South Caucasus.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized the importance of the Summit held in Washington in August last year for bilateral and regional relations, noting that the historic agreements reached within its framework have elevated relations between the two countries to a qualitatively new stage. It was stated that the Strategic Partnership Charter signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the United States of America has created an important basis for further expanding cooperation in such areas as political dialogue, economic cooperation, energy security and security.
In addition, attention was drawn to the fact that the Azerbaijan-U.S. Economic Cooperation Dialogue was held for the first time and that 10 cooperation documents covering trade, investment, energy, transport, digital development and other fields were signed.
During the meeting, attention was drawn to the importance of implementing the TRIPP project, which will serve to strengthen transport and communication links in the region and create unobstructed connectivity between mainland Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
While discussing the future prospects of Azerbaijan-U.S. relations, the importance of removing restrictions in bilateral cooperation was emphasized. In this context, it was noted that the complete repeal of Section 907, which restricts U.S. government assistance to Azerbaijan, would be in line with the spirit of the strategic partnership between the two countries and would contribute to further expanding cooperation in the fields of security, energy, transport, economy and regional stability. It was stated that the amendment reflects an outdated approach by its nature and does not correspond to current geopolitical realities or the level of the Azerbaijan-U.S. partnership.
The minister spoke about Azerbaijan’s long-standing contributions to the energy security of Europe and a wider geography, and provided information on the country’s projects in the field of green energy in addition to its traditional energy resources. It was emphasized that there are broad opportunities for cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United States in this area.
Highlighting the strategic importance of Azerbaijan’s relations with the Central Asian countries and the country’s acceptance as a full member of the Central Asia Consultative Meeting, it was noted that there are extensive opportunities for cooperation within the C6 format.
The Azerbaijan-Armenia normalization process was also discussed during the conversation. The minister provided detailed information to the other side on the normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as the reconstruction and rebuilding efforts being carried out in Azerbaijan’s liberated territories.
The meeting also included an exchange of views on other regional and international issues of mutual interest.
