Hawaii congressman adopts two proclamations concerning Azerbaijan

In Honolulu, Consul General met with Mayor Mufi Hanneman to discuss bilateral relations and cooperative projects with Baku. Importantly, Honolulu is the sister-city of Azerbaijan’s Capital, APA’s US bureau reports.
During the visit, Consul General was invited to speak at Hawaii Public Radio’s program “Business Beyond the Reef” and at the “John Noland Show” on the local radio KUMU 1500.
On Sept 19, Consul General spoke to the University of Hawaii representatives about Azerbaijan and also met the University President David McClain. During the meetings at the University and later at the East-West Center and at the Asia-Pacific Security Studies Center, Consul General discussed opportunities for education and research exchanges with Azerbaijan, especially with the newly-established diplomatic academy and in the area of IT and telecommunications. During the discussions, the counterparts from Hawaii were especially interested in Azerbaijan’s role as a moderate Muslim nation and its long-standing experience of religious and ethnic tolerance. Of course, the people of Hawaii are well-known for the diversity and tolerance. On the same day, he participated at the lunch with the Hawaii Consular Corps.
Consul General focused on the issues discussed above during the Sept 20 presentation on Azerbaijan at the Pacific-Asian Affairs Council, the main international affairs forum in Honolulu. The talk was co-sponsored by the East-West Center, Pacific Forum CSIS, the center for Chinese Studies and the University of Hawaii Center for Southeast Asian Studies.
Also, Consul General spoke before the Hawaii House of Representatives’ International Affairs Committee. The event was initiated by the Representative Gene Ward and chaired by the Committee Chair Rida Cabanilla. In her introduction, Ms. Cabanilla stressed the importance of Azerbaijan for the USA, Azerbaijan’s contribution to the global energy security and thanked Azerbaijani people for the nation’s support of the US efforts to combat terrorism. Consul General was presented with two proclamations by the House of Representatives. First commends and appreciated the commonalities between the people of Hawaii and the Republic of Azerbaijan, as well as the friendly relations that exist between the United States and Azerbaijan. The second one, expressing appreciation to Consul General Suleymanov for visiting Hawaii on behalf of Azerbaijan.
At the Hawaii Capitol, Consul General participated in the first–ever official “Peace Day” marked in Hawaii. During the celebration, he also met with Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle.
During the visit, Consul General was invited to speak at Hawaii Public Radio’s program “Business Beyond the Reef” and at the “John Noland Show” on the local radio KUMU 1500. He also participated in the dinner organized by the Turkish-American Friendship Association of Hawaii./APA/
