Azerbaijan has 55 diplomatic representatives abroad

The deputy minister said Azerbaijan will soon open six or seven more diplomatic representatives. They will be embassies in Mexico, Argentina, Syria and Croatia, consulate general in Yekaterinburg and representative office in Mahachkala. Azerbaijani ambassadors to Lithuania, Kyrgyzstan, Qatar and Tajikistan will assume office in a few weeks. Mr.Sadikhov attributed the increasing number of embassies to speedy economic development in Azerbaijan.
The Deputy Minister said over 30 foreign embassies, 2 general consulates, 13 representatives offices, 7 honorary consulates are operating in Azerbaijan and three or four new embassies are expected to be opened. Replying to the question on low salary of Azerbaijani diplomats abroad compared with other diplomats Mr.Sadikhov said the salary of diplomats depend on the economic situation of the country they serve in, “Azerbaijani diplomats can afford to live in normal condition with the current salary.”
The deputy minister said the ambassadors’ term of office is five years. However, this term may be shorter or longer depending on the situation, first of efficient activity of the mission. He reminded that Hafiz Pashayev served as ambassador to the US for 14 years. We also had ambassadors who worked only for one or two years. /APA/
