Military-diplomatic source in Russia: â€œMoscow might refuse Gabala RLSâ€

Russia is supposed to refuse to lease the station within the conditions proposed by Azerbaijanâ€, military-diplomatic source told Interfax, APA reports. He said that Baku is not satisfied with the Russian proposals on compromise on signing an interim lease agreement for 2-3 years due to the previous financial conditions: â€œRussia is supposed to refuse to lease the station and to sign any contract with Azerbaijanâ€.

The source said, in this case, Armavir Radiolocation Station will undertake the function of operating warning system on missile threat from the south.

â€œDeryalâ€ station, located in Gabala,Azerbaijan started its activity in 1985. It was one of 8 main stations of USSR Antiballistic Missile Defense System. This station is capable to control the area of 6000 km radius (it means Iran, Turkey, India, the whole Middle East, as well as Indian Ocean and the definite part of Australia continent). The station can define the trajectory of intermediate-range ballistic missiles launched form the above mentioned territory, as well as the trajectory of nuclear missiles from the moment they launched. Azerbaijan leased this station to Russia for USD 7 mln according to the agreement the sides signed in 2002. Now Azerbaijan demands USD 300 mln from Russia for leasing the station.
