Emphasizing the importance of the project, Gunnar Wiegand said the Trans-Caspian pipeline would diversify transportation of energy resources to Europe and will make Azerbaijan not only oil exporter, but also transit country. EU authorized the European Commission to negotiate the legal basis for realization of Trans-Caspian gas pipeline with Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.

Commenting on the visa facilitation talks between Azerbaijan and EU, Gunnar Wiegand said discussions on this issue would begin by the end of the year. “Visa facilitation will make travels to Europe cheaper and ease visa issues for the people regularly traveling to Europe. So we can ease communication between the people”.

Regarding the Russia’s possible response to the talks on construction of Trans-Caspian gas pipeline by reference to unsolved Caspian status problem, Gunnar Wiegand said EU didn’t intend to have tensions with any country: “EU only intends to diversify energy market by beginning the Trans-Caspian talks”.
