Minister said at the meetings with the Azerbaijani government the UK always gives proposals as to how it can help solve the problem. Lidington noted that the conflict must be solved basing on three principles of the Helsinki Final Act - respect for territorial integrity, peoples’ self-determination and non-use of force.

Highly appreciating the relations between Azerbaijan UK David Lidington called them very strong and valuable. He said the UK government regards Azerbaijan as the most important country among non-EU members. Minister said the main aim of the visit is to study the opportunities to further deepen the relations.
“I hope cooperation in non-oil sector, including culture, education will strengthen,” he said.

Noting that he visits Azerbaijan before the parliamentary elections, David Lidington said democracy is young in the country.
“Despite this, I hope the elections will be in line with the European standards,” he said.

UK Minister will meet with the representatives of Azerbaijani opposition today.
