After the armed conflict in South Ossetia, on August 12, 2008 Georgia instituted proceedings before the ICJ against Russia for alleged violation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. APA reports quoting UN website.
During two-round debates at the International Court the sides will express their arguments.
Tbilisi asked the International Court to demand Russia to restore rights of Georgian citizens in South Ossetia and Abkhazia as a preliminary measure before the hearings. Georgia accused Russia in systematic ethnic discrimination against the ethnic Georgians and other groups in the region since 1990.
On October 15, 2008, the International Court passed decision on temporary measures urging both Georgia and Russia to avoid any racial discrimination acts.
