Baku. Elnur Mammadli – APA. Portugal’s Foreign Minister Luis Amado, who is on a visit to Azerbaijan, met with his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov. The ministers held a briefing following the meeting, APA reports. Azerbaijani Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmar Mammadyarov said this visit would create large opportunities for the cooperation between Azerbaijan and Portugal. The minister said he informed his counterpart about the details of the Karabakh conflict. “We signed agreements about the political consultations between the foreign ministries of Azerbaijan and Portugal and visa-free travels of the persons with the diplomatic and service passports as well. We also discussed the extension of cooperation in the field of tourism”.

Portugal’s Foreign Minister Luis Amado said his country intended to extend its relations with Azerbaijan. “We are thinking about the cooperation in the fields of mutual interests not only in this region, but in Europe as well. I believe we can establish good cooperation in a number of fields. The region is developing dynamically and rapidly and extending its relations with the European Union. Azerbaijan is an active member of the Eastern Partnership Program and it plays an important role in the regional stability. From this point of view, it is important to develop bilateral relations with the EU members. I invited my colleague to Lisbon and I consider that the development of these contacts will promote extension of cooperation”.

Luis Amado noted that Portugal’s position on the Nagorno Karabakh problem coincides with the EU position. “We welcome the activity and position of the OSCE Minsk Group, advocate for peace and stability in the region and welcome statements made by the leaders of the co-chair countries”.
