Official history of the Azerbaijani diplomacy began on July 9, 1919 when temporary regulations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan were registered. 15 foreign ministers have been appointed to the post of the Minister of Foreign Affairs since that day. During the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan, Mammadhasan Hajinski, Alimardan Bey Topchubashov, Fatali Khan Khoyski and Mammad Yusif Jafarov took this office. Nariman Narminavov, Mirza Davud Huseynov, Mahmud Aliyev, Tahira Tahirova, Elmira Gafarova served in the period of Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. After the collapse of USSR, Huseynaga Sadigov, Tofig Gasimov, Hasan Hasanov, Tofig Zulfugarov, Vilayat Guliyev took the top diplomatic office in the country. Elmar Mammadyarov is the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan now.

Azerbaijan has 54 embassies, 11 consulates general abroad, as well as permanent missions to the Council of Europe, UN, UN Geneva Office, UNESCO, NATO and other international organizations. The successful foreign policy of Azerbaijan is directed to the protection of the country’s interests at the international arena and our diplomats play an irreplaceable role in this process.
