Then Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov addressed the meeting. He said by the decree issued by President Ilham Aliyev in 2007, the day of Azerbaijani Diplomacy was declared on July 9, the date when secretariat of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic’s Foreign Ministry was established in 1919.
The minister spoke about difficulties the Azerbaijani diplomats faced in the first days of the republic and participation of the Azerbaijani delegation headed by Alimardan Bey Topchubashov in the Paris peace conference. On January 11, 1920 the Azerbaijani diplomacy achieved its first success - the Versailles High Council’s member countries recognized independent Azerbaijan. Azerbaijani delegation held talks with well-known political figures like Lloyd George, Georges Clemenceau, Lord Curzon, Churchill, Foch and others and achieved the assistance of ally countries to Azerbaijan.
Mammadyarov said late 20th century Azerbaijan reached historical opportunity to restore its independence. “Azerbaijan was in one of the difficult periods of its history facing with military aggression by Armenia, heavy economic crisis and domestic instability. National Leader Heydar Aliyev’s return to power of independent Azerbaijan was a historic event in the country’s history. As a result of his comprehensive activity, the national statehood was strengthened, political stability and national unity was reached in the country, deep reforms were started in state-building and socio-economic fields and priorities of the foreign policy of Azerbaijan were determined within its national interestsâ€.
The minister said significant progress was made in all spheres under the President Ilham Aliyev’s leadership. “Azerbaijan became a regional leader. The number of resolutions was adopted at the UN, OSCE, Council of Europe, NATO and the Organization of the Islamic Conference, which recognized territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and condemned Armenia’s aggressive policyâ€.
The minister congratulated his colleagues on the occasion of their professional holiday.
Azerbaijani ambassador to Hungary Hasan Hasanov spoke about the diplomatic traditions of the country. Today the diplomats will leave for Nakhchivan to develop series of events there and then they will return to Baku to attend the final events.
