# 10 June 2009 12:42 (UTC +04:00)
During his Baku visit, he will meet with government and civil society representatives to discuss both bilateral and regional issues, Public Affairs Office of the US Embassy in Baku told APA. During his meetings he will discuss US-Azerbaijan cooperation on energy matters and security, as well as the involvement of the Obama Administration in seeking a peaceful resolution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
This is Assistant Secretary Gordon’s first visit to the region as Assistant Secretary. He assumed office on May 15, 2009, replacing Daniel Fried. Before joining the State Department, Dr. Gordon was a Senior Fellow from 2000 to 2009 at the Brookings Institution, in Washington, DC, where he focused on European and U.S. foreign policy issues. Prior to joining Brookings, Dr. Gordon served as Director for European Affairs at the National Security Council in the Clinton Administration. Gordon stated in his confirmation hearing this spring that his focus as Assistant Secretary is “to help promote democracy, encourage economic reform, protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and resolve the enduring conflicts” in the region.
