A scientific conference entitled â€œAzerbaijanâ€™s integration into European and Euro-Atlantic space â€“ tendencies and prospectsâ€ was held in Brussels on June 2, 2009. The conference was organized by the Institute of Strategic Researches, Azerbaijanâ€™s representations to the European Union and NATO on the occasion of 90 years anniversary of Azerbaijani diplomacy, Azerbaijani embassy in Belgium told APA. Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Araz Azimov, EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Peter Semneby, spokesperson for EU External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy Commissioner Emma Udwin, European Political Centerâ€™s researcher Amanda Akcakoca, NATO Assistant Secretary General Jean Francois Bureau, Romanian ambassador to NATO Sorin Dukaru and NATO International Military Staff Assistant Director General-Major George Lebel delivered speeches at the conference.

The speakers emphasized the important position of Azerbaijan in the present geopolitical situation and highly appreciated the purposeful activity of Azerbaijani leadership toward the strategic reforms for modernization of various spheres. They particularly pointed out the Azerbaijanâ€™s constructive contributions to the development reached within the European energy security, regional cooperation, as well as Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan, Baku-Tbilisi-Erzrum pipeline and Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway projects.

The active discussions were held on Azerbaijanâ€™s future integration into the European and Euro-Atlantic space, Azerbaijan-EU and Azerbaijan-NATO cooperation, solution to the conflict, security and stability, economic, trade and energy development. EU, NATO high-ranking officials, Brussels-based European experts, representatives of the diplomatic missions accredited in Belgium, as well as journalists attended the conference.
