England's Newcastle defeated Azerbaijan's Qarabag 6-1 in the first leg of their Champions League playoff to reach the last 16, APA reports.
Newcastle midfielder Anthony Gordon scored four goals, finding the net in the 3rd, 32nd, 33rd, and first minute of added time. He also converted two penalties. Malik Tshau (8) and Jacob Murphy (72) also scored for Newcastle. Elvin Jafarguliyev (55) scored for Qarabag.
Gordon became the second player in Champions League history to score four goals in a single half. The first to achieve this feat was Luiz Adriano, the Brazilian striker for Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk, who scored four times in a 7-0 away win against Belarusian BATE Borisov in the group stage.
The return leg will take place on February 24 at Newcastle's home stadium. Qarabag is the first and only team from Azerbaijan to advance past the Champions League stage. Overall, the Azerbaijani team finished 22nd with 10 points this season. Newcastle, with 14 points, finished 12th overall.
