Paris Saint Germain crowned a landmark night in their history on Wednesday by lifting the Intercontinental Cup for the first time edging past Brazilian giants Flamengo in tense final decided by penalties in Doha, Qatar, APA reports.
The clash staged at Al Rayyan Stadium, ended 1-1 after extra time before PSG held their nerve in the shootout to secure 2-1 victory on penalties, with goalkeeper Matvey Safonov emerging as the hero.
PSG started the final with clear intent and nearly struck inside the opening minutes. Vitinha’s early free-kick delivery found Joao Neves in the box but his effort drifted just wide of the right post.
The French champions thought they had taken the lead in the 11 minute after costly Flamengo error but the goal was ruled out following VAR review, with the ball deemed to have gone out of play moments earlier.
Persistence paid off before the break. In the 40 minute, Desire Doue’s low cross caused chaos in the Flamengo area and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia reacted quickest to fire PSG ahead into empty net.
