The World Bank has identified the modernization of the Baku–Alat–Boyuk Kesik railway, one of Azerbaijan’s main transport lines along the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor (TCTC), as one of the priority investment projects, stated in the World Bank’s report titled “Integration: World-Class Trade Logistics Along the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor,” APA-Economics reports.
The report states that one of the main investment areas identified for Azerbaijan for the development of the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor is the modernization of the Baku–Alat–Boyuk Kesik railway line.
The project’s total investment requirement is estimated at $260 million.
According to the World Bank, the project envisages upgrading the railway line’s electrification system and signaling infrastructure.
The aim of the project is to adapt Azerbaijan’s main railway line to the growing freight flows along the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor and expand the corridor’s operational capacity.
The report lists the modernization of the Baku–Alat–Boyuk Kesik line among the short-term priority projects planned to be implemented by 2030.
The World Bank notes that the development of the Trans-Caspian Corridor requires investments in railways, roads, seaports, border crossing points, and logistics infrastructure.
The report emphasizes that upgrading physical infrastructure alone is not sufficient to increase the corridor’s competitiveness. Alongside this, improving cross-border cooperation, trade facilitation mechanisms, and services is also considered important.
