The main reason of his resignation is Tusk has been chosen as the head of the European Council (EC). He is supposed to take up the new post since December 1.
The president will formally accept Tusk's resignation on Thursday, the head of the Presidential Press Office Joanna Trzaska-Wieczorek announced on Tuesday evening.
Tusk will still perform his duties until his successor is chosen.
Tusk's whole government would resign with him. The president is obliged to designate the new prime minister by Sept. 25.
The new prime minister will have two weeks' time to form a new government and obtain a vote of confidence for his cabinet in the Parliament.
During a press conference after the National Security Council meeting, the head of the National Security Bureau, Stanislaw Koziej said that the president and the prime minister met and talked for about 15 minutes.
The current coalition clearly inclined to nominate the Speaker of the Polish Parliament Ewa Kopacz as the candidate to take the post of the new prime minister.
Komorowski will surely meet the Kopacz, but not until the resignation of the current prime minister is accepted.
