Baku-APA. The Slovenian Foreign Ministry denied on Thursday media reports that its ambassador to NATO Andrej Benedejcic was suspected of spying for Russia, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
The Foreign Ministry confirmed that Benedejcic was summoned for talks over the reports, but issued a written statement after the meeting, saying that the allegation of spying was found to be "unsubstantiated rumour with no relevance to facts."
The same finding has been confirmed by information obtained by the ministry from Slovenian security authorities as well as from NATO, said the statement.
NATO has also denied any investigation being launched over the allegation. "There is no such NATO investigation," the Slovenian Press Agency quoted an unidentified Brussles-based NATO official as reporting.
Benedejcic has been the Permanent Representative of Slovenia to the Council of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization since late 2011.
Previously, he served as director general for global affairs at the Slovenian Foreign Ministry. He was ambassador to Russia from 2005 to 2008.
