Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland has congratulated people of Ukraine with a new President, elected in the first round, APA reports quoting Ukrainian 24 TV channel.

Jagland believes that the Ukrainians expressed a clear mandate, which should be an important step toward resolving the political crisis in Ukraine.

"I believe that the new president will act decisively to restore peace and democracy in the country. He can count on the Council of Europe, which will continue to support Ukraine on the way of reforms, including the reform of the Constitution," - he said.

According to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, full respect for democracy, human rights and the rule of law is the only way to ensure the Ukrainian people prosperity and peaceful future for their country.

President of Poland Bronisław Komorowski congratulated Poroshneko on his electoral victory during a telephone call. He expressed hope that the situation in Ukraine will return to normal after the elections. Bronisław Komorowski also invited Poroshenko to attend the events to be held on June 3-4 in connection with the 25th anniversary of the first democratic elections in Poland. U.S. President Barack Obama will attend the events, too.

Foreign Ministry of Sweden Carl Bildt has also congratulated Petro Poroshenko with a victory in the elections: “Clear result for Petro Poroshenko as new President is a result that’s good for Ukraine and good for Europe. Congratulations!”, he wrote on his Twitter page.
