Baku-APA. Romania's President Traian Basescu on Wednesday said the only solution to guarantee the security of the Republic of Moldova was to speed up its process of joining the European Union, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Basescu told a joint press conference after a meeting with his visiting Moldovan counterpart Nicolae Timofti that "measures that should prevent events as the ones that occurred in Ukraine and the Russian Federation."

Moldova should in the shortest possible time get "a timeframe, a guaranteed European prospect," he added.

Local media reported that Moldovan authorities feel their national territorial integrity is threatened by what happened in Crimea. Transnistria, a breakaway region of Moldova, also wants to become part of Russia.

A request to change the Russian legislation and allow Transnistria to join Russia was submitted by the head of the breakaway region, Mihail Burla to the head of Russian State Duma, Serghey Narishkin.

This is not the first request of this kind sent to Moscow by Transnistria, which declared independence in 1990, but remains unrecognized by any United Nations member state.

Following a "referendum" organized in 2006, allegedly 97.2 percent of participants were in favor of joining Russia.
