Baku-APA. Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski on Thursday called for an amendment of the UN Security Council's operational rules in order to make the most powerful UN body more effective in addressing global challenges of peace and security, APA reports quoting XInhua.
He made the remarks when speaking at the General Debate of the UN General Assembly, which entered its second day here Thursday.
The Security Council proved to be "ineffective" in dealing with conflicts in Ukraine and other regions of the world "partly due to the rules of its operation," Komorowski said.
"We are threatened by further plunging into powerlessness if such rules are not amended," he added.
Meanwhile, Komorowski also said UN members have the responsibility to secure those threatened by the Islamic State (IS) since their "barbarism" is a challenge for all humanity.
"Yet everything must be done to ensure that the actions we take follow the United Nations Charter," he said.
Komorowski urged efforts to provide countries incapable of getting rid of poverty with development assistance for their social, economic, and political transformation, especially conflict-torn countries like Ukraine, Iraq and Syria.
He also said the new UN development agenda should improve sustainable development and focus on poverty reduction and environmental protection.
Currently, the United Nations is leading the world efforts in discussing how to hammer out an effective global development agenda after 2015, the deadline of the Millennium Development Goals, a set of eight anti-poverty targets.
"Reaching an international understanding on this matter is a task as ambitious as it is difficult, yet necessary and feasible," Komorowski said.
