Baku-APA. A group of terrorists from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) opened fire on a military convoy carrying constriction equipment in the Silvan district of Diyarbakır on Wednesday, according to the Turkish military, APA report quoting today’s zaman.
A statement posted on the General Staff's website said the convoy was attacked in the Silvan FiÄŸ area as it was transporting construction equipment to a dam construction site. A total of 15 bullets hit an armored vehicle in the convoy, the statement said, adding that the soldiers in the convoy immediately responded to the attack and forced them stop the fire.
The attack occurred weeks after jailed PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan said the group's 30-year war against Turkey had become "unsustainable" and urged it to hold a congress on laying down its weapons.
Öcalan, who has been jailed on an island south of İstanbul since 1999, launched peace talks with now-President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan's government in 2012 to end a conflict that has killed more than 40,000 people, but progress has been faltering.
Turkey has fought the terrorist PKK since 1984, when it was set up with the goal of establishing an autonomous Kurdish state in eastern and southeastern Turkey. The PKK is recognized as a terrorist organization by the international community including the US and the EU.
