The head of the city district said that one person killed and five people have been injured in the blast.
Earlier news reports said the explosion may have been triggered by a power transformer. Ä°stanbul Governor Vasip Åžahin said in a statement that the cause of the blast is not yet known and that the authorities have been assessing all possibilities.
Footage from the scene showed ambulances and fire trucks have been dispatched to the scene of the blast. Åžahin said one person was injured in the blast.
Photographs on social media showed what appeared to be dozens of people walking alongside overground train tracks after the explosion smashed windows of a train.
Although Ä°stanbul's metro is largely underground, it runs above ground in some places, including around BayrampaÅŸa.
