He said the situation in Crimea causes concern. “Escalation of tension must be prevented, this is in the interests of both Russia and Ukraine,” he said.

Gerhard Schroeder considers that crisis and economic collapse in Ukraine will have a negative impact not only on Europe, but on the whole world.

“It is necessary to find a solution within Ukraine’s territorial integrity, it is also necessary to protect the rights of the national minorities in this country – both Russians and Crimean Tatars”.

Former German Chancellor said boycotting by international organizations is a wrong way, because it may deepen the crisis even more. He said Russia and European Union need Ukraine as a partner from political and economic point of view. The way out of the crisis is to carry out a dialogue that will be joined by both sides. Russia has lost its status as a superpower, but still wants to be treated so,” he said.
