Georgia has developed a new bill tightening punishments for ‘thieves in law’, Deputy Interior Minister of Georgia Natia Mezvrishvili told a briefing on Monday, an APA correspondent reported from Tbilisi.

A ‘thief in law’ in the Soviet Union and the post-Soviet states is a specifically granted formal status of a professional criminal who enjoys an elite position within the organized crime environment and employs informal authority over its lower-status members. A ‘thief in law’ is similar to mafia boss.

Georgia’s Interior Ministry continues to take strict measures against ‘thieves in law’, noted Mezvrishvili.

“In this regard, it is planned to make significant amendments to the legislation. The new bill expands the range of crimes for which punishment mechanisms are applied,” she said.

The deputy interior minister went on to say that the new bill will soon be submitted to the relevant bodies.
