Baku-APA. The European Union (EU) is to take a leading role at the global conference on internet governance in Brazil, the EU said in a statement on Wednesday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
The EU, represented by European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes and EU Special Representative for Human Rights Stavros Lambrinidis at the NETmundial conference in Sao Paulo on April 23-24, sets to join in discussion on the future of internet governance.
The European Commission said it is seeking to contribute actively to the debate to update the governance system for the internet, and is keen to strengthen the multi-stakeholder model to preserve the internet as a fast engine for innovation.
Kroes outlined that providing tools and mechanisms for better information sharing and capacity building aimed for a truly global debate and governance. She added jurisdictional issues on the internet were on top of the EU agenda for the NETmundial conference.
The European Commission in February issued a policy position calling for more transparent, accountable and inclusive governance of internet.
The document serves as a foundation for a common European approach in global internet governance negotiations, such at the NETmundial Conference this week, the Internet Governance Forum in August and the High Level ICANN meetings through 2014 and 2015.
