Baku-APA. The President of the European Council Donald Tusk on Tuesday reaffirmed the European support for Moldova, encouraging the country to implement the reform in justice sector and to fight against corruption, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
The visiting top European official, at a press briefing held jointly with Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti, reiterated the readiness of the European Union, the European Council, to back Moldova's European integration efforts and successfully implement the European project to expand in the East.
According to him, the sharp rise in trade between Moldova and the EU is a signal that the country follows the correct path, but a lot is yet to be done to make a real change. The justice sector reform and the fight against corruption are two key areas.
He stressed that Moldova needed an advancement of reforms, so that its citizens feel a change for the better.
"Moldova is currently facing difficulties for domestic reasons, as well as because of the unstable situation in the region. We will help Moldova build relations with foreign partners and establish trust at home," said Tusk.
For his part, President Timofti said that EU's support was further essential to implement projects on infrastructure, modernisation of public institutions, developing small and medium enterprises.
Timofti assured Tusk that his country will fulfill the commitments made to the EU and will use the huge opportunities offered by the historical EU Association Agreement signed last June.
In his meeting with Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici, Tusk appreciated Moldova as "the most promising partner in the process of European integration."
Tusk started his two-day visit in Moldova on Tuesday, the day when the former Soviet republic marks the first anniversary of the EU visa-free regime for Moldovans.
