Nine Germans, one Norwegian and one Peruvian were among the wounded, two of the wounded are in critical condition, he said.
The explosion struck close to a monument called the German Fountain, between the Blue Mosque and the Haghia Sofia — the city's famous landmark turned a museum and one of Istanbul's areas most popular with tourists.
He also said that the suspected suicide bomber had been identified from body parts as a Syrian born in 1988.
