Baku-APA.Nine rebels of the Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) terrorist group on Wednesday surrendered to the Turkish military in the southeastern Turkey, a military statement said on Sunday.

The nine PKK members, including a woman, reportedly fled the PKK's camps in northern Iraq and surrendered to the Turkish security forces at the Habur border gate station near the Silopi town of Sirnak province, the statement said.

The Turkish authorities started peace negotiations with the PKK in October 2012, which led to a cease-fire in March 2013. But PKK fighters started to return to their strongholds in northern Iraq in May 2013.

The PKK, which has been listed as a terrorist group by Turkey and other countries, took up arms in 1984 in an attempt to create an ethnic homeland for the Kurds in southeastern Turkey. Since then, over 40, 000 people have been killed in conflicts involving the group.
