Baku-APA. A fire broke out inside the Indonesian embassy here on Wednesday, injuring two men, of which one was reported by the Italian press to be in serious conditions, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

A diplomat found himself trapped by the fire in his office on the second floor of the building in a central area of the Italian capital, according to Rome-based Il Messaggero newspaper.

The man, who is father of three children, reportedly barricaded himself in the balcony, but then likely leapt from the building into an internal courtyard after the flames made him panic.

He suffered cardiac arrest and was rushed to hospital in serious conditions, Il Messaggero said. Another man was reportedly intoxicated and also taken to hospital.

According to the newspaper, it was a cleaning lady to first sound an alarm in the morning. "I saw there were flames in the administrative offices on the first floor," she was quoted as saying by Il Messaggero.

"I immediately took a fire extinguisher but then I realized that the blaze was too large and powerful, so I called the police," she said.

The building was partly destroyed, while traffic was stopped in the surrounding area to ease the intervention of firefighters and rescue teams, Corriere della Sera newspaper said. The smoke and a strong burning smell reportedly spread over few kilometers away.

La Repubblica newspaper wrote that the flames could have been started by a short circuit of a photocopier in a room of the administrative offices. Police were at work to ascertain the cause of the accident, the newspaper added.
