Baku-APA. The Turkish government will act as interlocutor during the ongoing peace process only if the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) laid down weapons, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday, APA reports quoting Turkish media.

Erdogan made the remarks in the Kurd-dominated province of Siirt in southeastern the country, according to local newspaper Hurriyet Daily News.

The government-promoted peace negotiation was launched in late October last year, aiming to disarm the PKK which has been in conflict with the government for decades. However, a local daily's report on the content of the meeting between jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan and three Kurdish deputies put a damper on the process.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, took up arms in 1984 in an attempt to create an ethnic homeland in southeastern Turkey. Since then, over 35,000 people have been killed in conflicts involving the group.
