Baku-APA. The Czech Constitutional Court on Wednesday halted the proceedings on the treason charge raised by the Senate over former president Vaclav Klaus, court general secretary Ivo Pospisil said, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Pospisil said that Klaus's mandate expired briefly after the charge was lodged, and that the judges had reached the conclusion that now they would not deal with his alleged violation of the law while holding the presidential post.

The senators impeached Klaus over his New Year amnesty, his reluctance to sign an addendum to the European Social Charter and his failure to appoint judicial trainee Petr Langer a judge in spite of a court verdict binding him to do so.

At the time the charge was lodged, the law did not expressly prescribe what should happen if the presidential mandate expires before the court delivers its ruling. The current legislation also says that the high treason proceedings should continue also after the president's term in office ends.
