European countries are considering purchasing American weapons in case US President Donald Trump refuses to provide direct assistance to Ukraine, APA reports citing Bloomberg.
Bloomberg writes that Europe lacks weapons stockpiles and the capacity to produce them in large quantities. It is becoming clear that the US will no longer supply arms. The White House has also rejected Europe's calls to increase pressure on Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin to agree to an immediate ceasefire through tougher sanctions.
Instead, according to people familiar with the matter, the Kremlin appears to be delaying the peace talks promised to Trump, preparing for a summer offensive.
In this context, the increasingly trusted proposal is to buy more American systems and then send those weapons to Ukraine. The idea is that if Trump refuses to supply American arms to Ukraine, Europe will do it instead.
Sources added that they expect the US to continue sharing intelligence with Ukraine to help identify targets. Earlier, a brief pause caused operational problems for Kyiv and raised broader concerns among US allies that they could face similar requests in the future.
Bloomberg also noted that experts say weapons supplies to Ukraine, approved by US President Joe Biden, could end this summer. Europe will struggle to produce enough weapons to fill that gap. Putin will likely try to exploit this dynamic.
