The European Union pays 1.5 billion euros per month for energy carriers imported from Russia, but the goal is to reduce this figure to zero, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said while commenting on the EU’s preliminary agreement to completely halt the use of energy carriers imported from Russia, APA reports, citing European Pravda.
Ursula von der Leyen announced the beginning of a new era in which Europe is free from full energy dependence on Russia.
She emphasized that the EU’s reduction of energy imports from Russia has led to a decrease in the revenues used to finance the aggressive war against Ukraine.
“At the beginning of the war, we were paying Russia 12 billion euros per month; now this amount has fallen to 1.5 billion euros per month, which is still too much, and we are trying to reduce it to zero,” Ursula von der Leyen added.
