The United Kingdom will allocate £750 million ($1 billion) to create a supercomputer for artificial intelligence (AI), according to a statement from the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, APA reports.

"When it becomes operational in 2030, it will be one of the most advanced in the world. The system will combine proven and advanced processors with the latest microchips, enabling it to perform complex tasks more efficiently than traditional supercomputers," the statement noted.

More than half of this amount – £400 million – will be used to equip the AI supercomputer with next-generation chips. The first £150 million will be allocated this summer.

The tender for the creation of this extremely powerful computing system will be announced soon. The supercomputer will be housed at a center being established at the University of Edinburgh and integrated into the overall system of the UK AI development project, along with the UK computing centers Isambard-AI, DAWN, and Zenith.

The emphasis will be on ensuring that UK-developed chips occupy a central place in the new system. The department noted that it is being created to provide "researchers, startups, and public services with access to computing power for the development and safe use of AI" in the UK.
